Spotlight On: Tanglewood Guitars

Sundance Performance Pro

Tanglewood’s Sundance Performance Pro Series is the culmination of decades of guitar building expertise and research. Swedish master luthier Michael Sanden has designed Tanglewood’s new flagship models, boasting all solid wood combinations and sumptuous features on some of the most popular and iconic acoustic body shapes in guitar history.

This new Sundance series comprises 6 special handcrafted models, in all solid, premium reserve timbers. The range begins with the heritage inspired Dreadnought TW15ASCE,  Superfolk cutaway model TW45ASE, and the Super Folk cutaway all solid Mahogany TW47E. Every one of these guitars features all solid construction and Custom Master design parallel and fan tapered bracing patterns. All electro models feature Fishman Presys Plus electronic systems.

The range and tone of the final model then gets turbocharged with the addition of Torrefied top, the TW70TE model. Using a new kiln drying technique called Torrefaction, this range topping Performance Pro instrument has been created with unique sound characteristics that replicate a well loved vintage instrument that has been played in for over 30 years!

Union Series

The Tanglewood Union series guitars are a range of class leading, quality driven solid top guitars, created to excite and amaze consumers with outstanding value and ultra competitive pricing.

Constructing Union from classic Mahogany tone woods, with premium cosmetic grade solid African Mahogany tops, each Union model has maple hardwood binding to the body front and headstock, with a maple inlay forming the soundhole rosette. This contrast of rich Mahogany and cream maple really makes the guitar stand out visually and we hope will become as iconic for Union and Tanglewood as the Whiskey Barrel finish has been on Crossroads.

We’ve chosen a Korean made classic chrome machine head for precise tuning and a fabulous new rosewood alternative fingerboard material “Eboncore™”. This exciting new material is a contemporary simulated Ebony product which has outstanding cosmetic clarity matched with the robust density of heritage Ebony timber. The Eboncore™ fingerboards will lend even greater stability to the necks and hold the frets even tighter, giving Union series models class leading intonation and playing actions.

Crossroads

The Crossroads series pays homage to the style & sound of classic instruments from 1930’s America.

Tanglewood set out to create an instrument that evokes these traditional values, & commissioned the services of a very special luthier, Michael Sanden, the man behind Tanglewood Masterdesign. Michael is the creator of the Sanden Guitar company in Sweden, and now the chief design consultant for Tanglewood Guitars.

Michael started with the tree, selecting timbers that will sound good together, making the soundboards a precise measurement so they will flex and respond to the players attack, and then he braces the instrument with his own patterns to make each instrument have its own personality. It’s not just the special bracing, or the woods that are selected, or the construction method even.

All these are vital components for any guitar… but on Crossroads Michael wanted to create something very special. He wanted to make a guitar that could have the sound that any musician, professional or amateur could appreciate. He wanted to make the guitar look authentic to the 1930’s era, adding a wonderful dark tobacco burst stain to the timbers to make the Crossroads guitars look historic and simply elegant. And he demanded that the neck profiles and bridge contouring and fret inlaying should be implemented without regard to the price of manufacturing, to proudly reflect the Tanglewood ethos of outstanding value and performance.
