Fact Or Funny

This week we decided to go with a Fact: Let's look at the History of the Ukulele.

Most people assume that the Ukulele originated in Hawaii, which is kind of half-true. It actually travelled to Hawaii from Portugal, by way of three cabinetmakers named Augusto, Manuel and Jose, who went there looking for work. They took their favourite local instrument, the Machete da Braga, and began building similar models in their new Hawaiian home. They called it the Ukulele, and it caught the eye of King Kalakua, which immediately made it the most popular instrument on the islands.

Today the Ukulele embodies everything tropical, and is a favourite instrument here in South East Queensland, and all around the world. If you want some more info on this fascinating story, click here.

Fact Or Funny

This week we decided to go with a Fact: Where did the Banjo come from?

This is actually somewhat of a sad story. The Banjo first emerged among African slaves in North America in the 1600s, as an adaptation of the stringed lute type instruments in Africa. It became a staple of the minstrel era, but managed to rise above this to become a popular instrument in America. The 1972 movie Deliverance featured the most famous piece, Duelling Banjos, and not a day goes by that we don't hear this in the store :P (not that we don't love it!).

These days Banjos bring to mind lazy summer nights, relaxing country atmosphere, chilling out with good company, and all the things that Music is supposed to bring to our lives. It's great to see things that start off in a bad place rise above their origin, but it's also good to be reminded of the darker parts of our past - as they say, those who don't study history are doomed to repeat it.
